OPEN JUVENILE TEAM TAKES HOME BRONZE KINGSTON, RI — The Central Park Ice synchronized skating teams finished out their 2012-2013 competitive skating season on Saturday, February 23, exactly as they began last Fall: by bringing home medals. The Preliminary line earned gold in their division at the Lee Ann Miele Synchro Open with their energetic program to “King of New York,” the theme from the Broadway hit “Newsies.” The Open Juvenile team won the bronze medal in their division with their elegant “Empire State of Mind” program. “This has been a year of tremendous growth for our teams,” said Ashley Walker Green, head coach and founder of Central Park Ice. “Measured by any standard, the girls are maturing on and off the ice into true teammates and strong competitors. We love the energy and enthusiasm they bring to the rink at each and every practice and competition.” This season, Central Park Ice teams captured medals in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, the most since the program was founded in 2008. “At CPIce, we don’t just judge our winters by how many medals we win. But all these medals do help tell the story of our club: a group of strong skaters who can focus and compete with confidence. We are very excited to continue to build on our successes,” said Walker Green. While the competitive season has ended, the CPIce skaters are still hard at work. The teams will be offering a series of open clinics at Wollman Rink in Central Park and at Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers starting in mid-March. They will also be performing at rinks around the city to spread the word about the teams and their sport. Clinics are recommended to anyone interested in trying out for next year’s teams. CPIce’s Preliminary line earned a dazzling second place in the qualifying round, gaining them a spot in the finals at the highly competitive Eastern Sectional Synchronized Skating Championships. This was the first time Central Park Ice has fielded a Preliminary level team at Easterns and the second consecutive season that one of Central Park Ice’s lines qualified to skate in the championship round. “Two of the many things we strive for at Central Park Ice are strength and consistency. We have now accomplished both,” said Ashley Walker Green, head coach and founder. “That only means even greater things lie ahead for us.” Skating on the same ice where many American athletes have captured Olympic gold, the Preliminary girls skated like the royalty they were meant to portray in their program: “King of New York,” the theme from the Broadway hit “Newsies.” They took sixth place in the finals out of 15 teams overall. CPIce’s Open Juvenile line skated to the Alicia Keys song “Empire State of Mind.” A panel of seven judges awarded them sixth place in an extremely challenging field of nine. “We have been competing at Easterns for five years now, and every year we are more motivated to have fun and excel,” said Walker Green. “This year was no different. Our girls have once again learned that hard work and practice does in fact pay off.” Next weekend it’s off to the campus of Wesleyan University, where the club will skate in the Connecticut Synchro Classic in their final competition of the 2012-2013 season. It will be the first competition for CPIce’s Beginner line. The lines will then perform a series of exhibitions around the five boroughs to finish out the winter. Clinics and tryouts for next season will begin in March (exact dates to be announced soon). Check www.centralparkice.com |
